DO I HAVE A BURST PIPE?

ONE OR MORE OF THESE SYMPTOMS MAY BE A SIGN OF A BURST PIPE!

The water meter is spinning when all the taps are off:

This is the best indication that you have a burst pipe and one of the first things we will check, but also something you can do yourself.

Your water account has suddenly increased dramatically:

This could happen for a number of reasons, such as a toilet cistern may be allowing water to run into the pan; taps may be dripping or the reticulation may be coming on more frequently than necessary. It can also be a warning that there is a burst pipe.

You can hear a hissing sound when all the taps are off:

This is a clear sign that there is a leak and what you’re hearing is the sound of the water escaping from the pipe. However, where you hear the noise is not necessarily the place where the burst pipe is, as the sound often travels.

There is reduced pressure at the taps:

This is a sign that there may be a burst pipe.

The hot water is not hot:

This could mean that there is a hot water leak and interestingly the majority of burst pipes happen on the hot line. This is partly due to the pipe contracting and expanding with the change of temperature of the water. Of course, no hot water may also mean you need a new hot water system.

There is dampness:

Evidence of water and moisture can be an indication of a leaking pipe, but not always. We have a lot of calls from people who have dampness on the wall adjacent to a shower and most of these issues are related to water seeping through the grouting and tiles from the shower and not a burst pipe. We can provide a pressure test to confirm if there is a leak on the water service or if it is a tiling issue, either way, the problem needs to be resolved.
